A recent study published by Frontiers compared the effects of tai chi and conventional exercise on functional mobility and balance in healthy older adults.
Tai chi includes a series of whole-body movements that are performed simultaneously and continuously, emphasising multi-joint coordination. Tai chi also combines regulated breathing into the movement routine and more focus on awareness of body alignment and self-control that can particularly help balance control.
The research concluded tai chi can induce greater improvement in functional mobility and balance in older adults compared to conventional exercise in a more efficient fashion, especially compared to single-type conventional exercise.
